Competition Rules XII International Music Competition Paços Premium


Introduction

1. The XII “Paços’ Premium” – 2018 International Music Competition, which will cover the categories of Guitar, Flute and Trumpet, will take place from the 7th to the 15th of July 2018, at the Paços de Brandão (Portugal) Music Academy Auditorium. The competition is geared to students in various levels of specialized artistic musical education: beginners, elementary, secondary
and advanced.

2. This competition is held annually.

3. The goals of this competition include fostering the study of music, promoting learning exchanges among students from various schools and nationalities, encouraging students to achieve new levels of performance, and developing a taste for classical music.

4. The Competition’s Organizing Committee comprises the AMPB’s String and Wind Departments, under the artistic direction of Educational Direction (Alexandra Trindade, Marina Pereira and Joana Anacleto).

 

Conditions for Participation

1. The duly filled-in Registration Form shall be received at the registrar’s office of Paços de Brandão Music Academy, via either personal or postal delivery, no later than 23rd June 2018 (CTT postmark no later than: 18th June). No registrations shall be accepted beyond said date. Registrations may also be submitted online, via the AMPB website: www.acadmusicapb.com and email

2. Applicants must also send a (sharp) passport photo and a photocopy of the Identity Card or Citizen’s Card.

3. A copy of solo music scores and one copy of the piano part in digital format shall be submitted with the registration form to e-mail pacospremium@acadmusicapb.com. A copy of each part (solo and piano part) shall be sent by post in hard-copy format.

4. Registration fees shall be as follows:
Categories A and B – 60.00€
Categories C and D – 45.00€
Categories E, F and G – 35.00€
Academy members get 20% off. Payment can be made via cheque issued to the “Tuna Musical Brandoense” or via bank transfer to the following IBAN: PT 50004601130060055913272. (It is mandatory to send proof of payment.) In the event of withdrawal from the competition, this amount is non-refundable.

5. The given program may not be changed after the application is sent in.

6. Students shall enter the competition in the level that corresponds to the program they will be performing.

7. The contestant’s age is considered as of 31 December 2017.

8. Participants shall be introduced in alphabetical order, within the level in which they are competing.

9. The first 16 (sixteen) applications in each level shall be accepted.

10. Every public performance shall take place at the Auditorium on the AMPB premises. The public will have to attend each performance in its entirety, and shall not be able to leave or enter during each one of them.

11. The repertoire of the final performance will have to be different from that pertaining to the elimination round, except in category C on Guitar (see competition rules of Guitar).

12. The performance schedule and timetable shall be abided by, as previously stipulated, whereof contestants shall be made aware, via electronic mail.

13. Contestants will all be allowed to rehearse, at the place where performances are to be given (only in elimination round competition), and at a time to be set by the competition’s organizing committee.

14. Contestants shall provide their own Accompanying Pianist. (Despite not shouldering any responsibility, the Academy may provide contacts of possible accompanying pianists).

15. Winners (1st Prize Winners) from previous competitions may enter only in higher age categories.

16. No private audio or video recordings of elimination-round and final performances shall be allowed, as the Competition’s Organizing Committee shall reserve all such rights for dissemination purposes and for an indefinite period.

17. Participants shall be solely responsible for expenses for personal travel and accommodation. The organization is not responsible for the non-use of original scores.

18. The Academy can provide a list of music stores where foreign applicants can get Portuguese composers pieces, if these are their choice.

19. It shall be incumbent on the Competition’s Organizing Committee to resolve issues not included in these rules.

 

Panel of Judges

1. The panel of judges shall comprise 3 members and chaired by AMPB teacher of instrument in the competition.

2. For the attribution of the Excellence Award, the jury will be constituted by the Educational Direction of AMPB, a member of the former “Tuna Musical Brandoense” and the Artistic Director of Paços de Brandão International Music Festival or the Chairperson of the CiRAC (Círculo de Recreio, Arte e Cultura).

3. The panel of judges reserves the right to interrupt the performance of each candidate, if said panel deems it appropriate.

4. The panel of judges reserves the right not to award any prize.

5. Decisions by the panel of judges shall be final.

6. In exceptional cases where the contestant is a student of one of the members of the panel of judges, such panel member shallbe ruled out of that same contestant’s evaluation.

 

Dates

1. Elimination-round and final performances shall be given on 7th, 8th and 9th of July – Flute; on 10th, 11th and 12th July – Guitar; 13th, 14th and 15th of July – Trumpet.

2. The “Paços’ Premium Opening Concert 2018,” to be held on 30th of June, at 9:30 p.m., at the Auditorium of the Municipal Library of Santa Maria da Feira, shall be given by contestants who won in the highest levels of the previous year’s competition.

3. The Winners’ Concert shall be held on 15 of July, at 7 p.m., at the Dr. Arménio Carvalho Auditorium of Paços de Brandão Music Academy, followed by a “port of honor.””

1. There are 3 prizes per category (first, second and third prizes), along with honorable mentions and certificates of participation.

2. No ex-aequo prize shall be awarded in any category.

· The top-ranked winners for each instrument will take part in the Opening Concert at the 2019 Paços’ Premium International Competition;
· A concert included in the 2019 FIMUV – “Festival Internacional de Música de Paços de Brandão” (Paços de Brandão International Music Festival, FIMPB) for the first-prize winners in the competition’s highest categories.

3. Revelation Prize and Award for Best Performance of a Portuguese or Spanish Piece: the panel of judges shall select the candidates in each instrument; winners will be invited to take part in the Opening Concert of the 2019 Paços’ Premium.

4. A concert with the Youth Orchestra of Santa Maria da Feira, as a soloist, for the first-prize winners in the competition’s highest categories. This offer is intended for first-prize winners in category A.

5. Prize for the “best performance of piece by J. Rodrigo” worth 100 euros for Guitar and Flute.

6. Excellence Award: at the end of the Winners’ Concert, the committee comprising the AMPB’s Educational Board, the Artistic Director of the Paços de Brandão International Music Festival or the Chairperson of the CiRAC and a member of “Tuna Musical Brandoense” will select the candidate that most stood out during said Concert, who shall be invited to participate in the Paços
de Brandão International Music Festival in 2019.

7. Certificate of participation for every contestant.

8. The official awards ceremony shall take place at the Winners’ Concert, where all winning contestants shall undertake to be present. Should a winning contestant not be on hand at this  ceremony, (s)he shall not be awarded the corresponding prize and certificate.

Two pieces, at least, which will include one
piece by a Portuguese composer, with a
time limit of 15 minutes.

Final Round
Repertoire chosen by the contestant, without repeating any work from the elimination round, which will include one piece or movement, by composer Joaquin Rodrigo, with a time limit of 15 minutes.

B. Students up to age 18
Elimination Round
Two pieces, at least, which will include one Study or Prelude, by composer Heitor Villa- Lobos, with a time limit of 15 minutes.

Final Round
Repertoire chosen by the contestant, without repeating any work from the elimination round, with a time limit of 15 minutes.

C. Students up to age 15

Two pieces, at least, which will include one Study, by Leo Brouwer, with a time limit of 10 minutes.

Final Round
Three pieces, at least, which can include no more than one piece played in the elimination round, with a time limit of 12 minutes.

D. Students up to age 12
Single Round
Three pieces, at least, with a presentation lasting no more than 12 minutes.

E. Students up to age 10
Single Round
Three pieces, at least, with a presentation lasting no more than 8 minutes.

F. Students up to age 8
Single Round
Three pieces, at least, with a time limit of 6 minutes.

 

All the pieces must be played by heart.
